What Story Does the Performance Tell?

The Barong and Keris performance uses traditional Balinese mythology to stage the conflict between Barong’s protective power and Rangda’s destructive power.

Versions of the performance can differ in how characters and scenes are introduced. Printed synopses may also use different English spellings or simplify the story for visitors.

You do not need to memorise every character before arriving. Understanding Barong, Rangda and the significance of the final keris confrontation is enough to make the performance much easier to follow.
